Mark J. Werner, MD

Director

Mark Werner, MD, is a Director with Chartis whose career as a senior physician executive spans 30 years, the last 7 of which have been spent in healthcare consulting. As a broadly experienced physician executive, Mark has a proven track record in developing vision, executing strategies, leading large-scale transformation, shaping culture, engaging physicians, aligning operations, and managing financial performance within multiple healthcare settings. His executive leadership experience includes large regional integrated delivery systems, academic health systems, regional multi-specialty medical groups, tertiary acute care hospitals, and regional health plans. Mark has extensive experience leading large-scale transformation initiatives in complex environments, including developing and implementing transformations of health system clinical and operating platforms, optimizing medical group performance, facilitating merger and acquisition integration efforts across multi-constituent physician enterprises, and the development of the physician leadership and alignment needed for success. He is known to be an engaging, innovative, accessible and authentic leader with the strong communication, global management, and change management skills needed to address today’s challenges. 

Before joining Chartis, Mark held positions as the Chief Clinical Innovation Officer for Fairview Health Services, President and Chief Physician Executive of Carilion Clinic and its associated hospital system, Chief Clinical Officer for Medica Health Plan, as well as leadership roles within several academic health centers and children’s hospitals. Prominent within the national physician leadership community, Mark is Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Physician Leadership (formerly ACPE). He also previously served on the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Child Health Financing and remains a member of numerous boards and advisory groups across the healthcare industry. 

Mark received his medical degree from Vanderbilt School of Medicine with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Vanderbilt and a fellowship in adolescent medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center. He went on to complete a program in medical management at Carnegie Mellon University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry from Rice University where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude.
